EQLovesFestival 2021 took place on October 16th 2021 at 6:30 p.m. and could be watched for free live on facebook or youtube. You can now watch it afterwards here:

This year it’s in the form of a creative collaboration project, and the non profit organization has done things a bit differently. The focus has been on the members, many of whom are artists as well as producers. In preparation for the festival, the organization has gathered and collaborated, and the members have created a soundbank together inspired by carefully selected keywords centering around the theme equality. The soundbanks have then been compiled into five different representation designs with the help of Ableton Live.

For previous years, EQLovesFestivals main theme has been to present thoughts about equality and its progress in the field of music production. Through panels among other things, and to shine a light on role models in the field that are not CIS-males, all the while networking with different sister organisations. The festival has presented live performances where prominent female and non-binary producer artists have performed their original music. EQLovesMusic has collaborated with many sister organisations through the years by creating events both in Sweden and abroad, notably New York.

Like last year, this year’s festival has been affected by the pandemic, causing the Festival to be streamed online only with no live audience, as the preparation work started in January with the state of the world still uncertain.

EQLovesMusic wanted the representation designs performed at the festival to be in line with the issue the association is working with:

How can the sound designs convey condescending attitudes, prejudice, gender discrimination, exclusion, sexism but also strength, courage, stamina, sisterhood, sense of belonging and support systems? How could we facilitate, and create possibilities, for all the members who wanted to participate in this project?

The answer was to create a soundbank inspired by carefully selected keywords,  that were then compiled in Ableton Live in preparation for performance. This enabled members who could not participate physically to contribute with their own sound designs in the finished production, bringing their ideas to fruition.

Seeing as most members, more than a good 40, in EQLovesMusic had only worked previously with other DAWS than Ableton Live, the association booked a webinar with Loljud. Loljud is a producer and artist that has previously performed at the festival using Ableton Live for it, as for most of her performances . After the webinar the members would meet up online to create the soundbank.

EQLovesMusic was further supported by Ableton, contributing to the project in the form of Ableton Live Lite-versions of the program that everyone could access.

EQLovesFestival has previously sported big producer names in the festival  like Leila Arab, a producer that has worked with Björks Live DJ.  Grammy winning producer Sylvia Massy and Linn Fijal from Benny Anderssons music studio Riksmixningsverket, Ebony Bones, Ayla, Ida Redig, the producer and Denniz pop-award-nominated Selen Özan, the artist and producer Loljud, Ana Diaz, Erin Tonkon (David Bowie), Gloria Kaba (Madonna, Beyonce, Phil Ramone, Kanye West, Salaam Remi, Aretha Franklin and Frank Ocean), Heba Kadry (The Mars Volta, Slowdrive, Lightning Bolt, Beach House, Björk) are just some of the many other names.

This year we’ve decided to focus on our members and the creation of a collaboration to perform at the festival. The final result is a diverse collection of sound designs from the members leading up to a culmination of soundbanks that Maria, Kimtina, Nadja, Zukie and Melisha from EQLovesMusic have been able to compile and focus into 5 different representation designs.

“We’re very happy and proud about completing this project this year with so much focus on our members and the collaboration between them. The result is an exciting compilation of the different sound designs created”, //Maria, Kimtina, Nadja, Zukie & Melisha from EQLovesMusic.

“To explore the idea ‘Equality’  in connection to our community,  and at the same time on my own, and then morphing the feelings and the collected sounds into a composition was an emotionally revolutionary process. I’ve found a completely new sound than enables me to readily adorn the work with poetry and prose. It amplifies and crystallizes my own journey in an unbalanced and unequal music business . The process has been purifying.”// Nadja Itäsaari, one of the sound compilers from EQLovesMusic who will perform the representation design SmurFAAN!

In connection to the festival there was also a pre-party where the live performers talked about the process of creating the compositions and collaborations performed. The pre-party was streamed on October 11th 6.30 and is in swedish:

The Documentary – “Women in Music Production” highlights the challenges within the music industry today. The main focus is production and the people behind the music –

professional engineers and producers who want to share their story and experiences. To aspire to a career within creative technology is common, however, somewhere along the way, people are phased out in a way that reinforces gender stereotypes. The industry has been like this for years, yet far from everyone is aware that it is something that still happens every day, all around the world. To inspire a change, music creators from both Sweden and the United States share their goals and achievements, and discuss how to create a sustainable future that includes everyone.

Hon gjorde enstaka spelningar i Skandinavien medan hon spelade och gav ut de två akustiska albumen ‘Moonlight Here’ (2018) och ‘Pass This Way’ (2019).

Under vintern 2020 är Linn aktuell med nya skivan ‘I Heard there’s Music on the Town’.

Vanessa is a singer/composer/arranger/producer and lyrical writer from Gothenburg SWE. She has appeared in various constellations and in different contexts over the years. Her musical history and work varies over a broad field of genres, from solid roots in jazz to classical to electro to hip hop to soul and singer/songwriter.

Currently Vanessa finished producing jazz vocalist Alexander Lövmarks soloalbum “Perfect Storm” released in Januari 2018. In may of 2018 she released a new soloalbum called “Göteborgs Pyramider”. website: http://www.vanessaliftig.com/

Zukie is a soulfull Neosoul singer while she writes heartbroken countrysongs and producing funky dance beats. She is a reflection of a multiartist with a passion for playing live and creating a feeling of joy and celebration of life.

Shadi G is a Swedish songwriter, producer and singer whose soulful voice and unique RnB/Soul sound is striking the attention of some of Swedens biggest music magazines. Being schooled in classical music from a young age, growing up with music all from jazz, RnB, soul, hip hop to Persian music, where she has her roots, Shadi is crossing borders with her own soulful sound, both in style and language. Straight after high school she went off to London to learn music production and in 2016 she released her debut single “Lost”, which got her on to some of Sweden’s biggest playlists. In 2017 she started her own record label, Goldamin Records, from which the second single “Where We Go”, was released. From the label followed her first EP “No Fear” and singles “Disconnection” and “Mind”. A new artist but already carving out a clear space in her field, and as stated by Soundlooks Magazine – “Discussions are quietly surfacing aboutwhether Shadi G may become an important face of contemporary R&B”.

Me Unique and Thomas Seminar Ford.

The Gothenburg-based Singer/Songwriter, Producer and Arist Maria Bohm has loved singing and playing the piano ever since she was alittle toddler. Searching for new ways to play instruments and exploring sounds has been her leader ever since.

Maria’s etherial style will haunt you, the subversive comments she makes with her music and lyrics may haunt you even more. Flirting with the genre where Kate Bush and Tori Amos have left their mark, but never copying, her artistry is unique and hard to forget. A serious, but at the same time, dreamy and captivating art pop soundscape.

She has studied several music educations in both Sweden and in England, including music production which has been a favourite topic of hers. The core of her inspiration has most often been revolving round equality, human and animal rights, which is also why she single handedly produced an album as an introduction to her artist career, completely made by women, from the instruments, to the layout and photos and even the printing. She has six releases under her belt, the most recent one being the EP ”Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires” responding to, among other things, sexism, racism, the petty men in power and the

wrecking of the environment. The earth shaking video ”Me Too” has her filming her own panic attack due to PTSD, as women in the intro say the words out loud that they have only used as hashtags before.

Kimtinaproducer is a musicproducer/ artist/ DJ from Sweden, with Bosnian roots, educated artist/performer and music producer since 2005. She has been performing for nearly 25 years, singing and rapping on stage but decided to get more involved in what she calls ”behind the music” almost 15 years ago. Main music genres are Happy hardcore and dubstep but she loves to mix it up with others genres as well like, rnb, trap, synth wave, metal and much more.

In 2018 Sara moved to Gothenburg to attend Popkollos music producer program Vem Kan Bli Producent (Who Can Be A Producer). During thatautumn she dropped the singles ”My Choice” and ”Cruise” that were played in p3 Osignad (P3 unsigned) In 2019 she released her second EP ”Fangirl”, an Electro Pop record with a so called geek theme inspired by TV shows and books like Doctor Who, Breaking bad and Harry Potter. The EP was the first to be released on Windsång Music, her own company. The EP was received warmly and the song ”Expecto Patronum” was picked up by an American radio show.

Apart from the geek culture, human rights stokes Sara’s fire and she has performed at human rights project demonstrations such as Sång för Mångfald and 1Göteborg.

In 2019 she has credits as a producer on 2 versions of that year’s EQLovesFestival anthem ”We are here”.

On March 8th 2020 she released her first official music video to the song “My Choice” that she produced and directed herself and on July 1st she released the single ”Leaving”, about breaking free from a destructive relationship and taking an independent stand.

Dajana — a Singer-Songwriter and Music Producer from Sweden. She’s half Nigerian and Serbian, born in former Yugoslavia in 1983 but adopted to Sweden at the age of three. Dajana Lööf was a promising athlete during her teen years. But she also grew a passion for music, and pursued that career instead.

Dajana was one of the participants in the Swedish Fame Factory 2003, and after that, she had a career as TV-host in different shows, entered Eurovision 2012 as a songwriter and toured around singing and rapping behind the Swedish rapper Cleo.

Eventually, Dajana left the spotlight for a while, as she was struggling with mental health issues. She was diagnosed with ADHD and ended up using weed to get by. A combination of addiction to drugs and alcohol and being a perfectionist, she composed a lot of music that never was released.

On the 15th of August 2019, Dajana entered a twelve-step program. She is now sober and ready to make music again. And you can follow her creative journey on her official website dedicated to her youtube channel and her music-production, and above all, her fans.

An intense sound sculptor using Ableton Live as her prime instrument, Anya Trybala AKA Ninoosh has been steadily carving out her unique musical style and production prowess. With Polish roots, and hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Ninoosh has finally found solid contentment and thriving creativity in her new home of Malmö, Sweden.

Ninoosh absorbs and records the intricate sounds of nature, contrasted with those of harsh industry, layering her tracks with bursts of synths, vocals and muted brass. Her live show is equally unique, offering of “music that shifts from intense IDM through to experimental electronic pop music” (hymn.se) and 2018 saw her move bodies at Extreme Chill Festival in Iceland, play Eter Festival in Sweden and support the luminous Zola Jesus.

Through her frustration at the lack of role models in electronic music, Anya founded Synth Babes in 2015 as a platform for emerging women and non-binary electronic music artists. She has since moved back to Melbourne and through these COVID-19 times has been working on a new album Pause Magic as a follow-up to her album Floodgates set for release in 2021.

Rauður is the stage name of Icelandic musician and producer Auður Viðarsdóttir. Formerly a keyboardist and singer of Nóra, a band active in Iceland’s music scene a few years back, she has now emerged as a solo artist. Through the making of her debut album ‘Semilunar’, she developed her unique sound, merging electronic and acoustic elements into an ethereal soundscape. Her voice weaves together with eccentric beats and captivating melodies that take us through highs and lows, while her accompanying lyrics tend to reverberate with different types of disasters – sometimes pretty, sometimes crude – always fascinating.

On stage, rauður usually performs on her own, inviting us into her enticing world of synthesisers, beats and samples – safely guided by her beguiling, almost angelic, voice. She is a versatile performer, easily shifting between electronic and acoustic moods, while keeping the audience captivated and engaged.

Although a solo artist and performer, she thrives best in collaboration. She is a part of the international collective and label Synth Babes, including artist such as Ninoosh (Australia) and Loljud (Sweden). She is also involved in a vast network of ‘girls rock camps’ and has initiated international music projects and collaborations. In Iceland, she works together with her brothers from the duo Andy Svarthol.

Loljud, who has been compared to artists like The Knife, Björk and Sia, is recognizable because of her distinct omni-artistic and unpredictable

approach to electronic music. As a collector of sounds she sieves the world through a hoop-net. With it she catches sounds like water drops, white noise and mobile phone alarms. The Swedish word for noise is “oljud”, and you can literally just pick that word out of her stage name. And the noise is not just unexpected elements of the production, it forms conceptual building blocks ushering the storytelling ever forward.

Spring 2020 saw the release of her debut album The Phases, a triptych divided into three EP:s, by the label Synth Babes. The Pre Phase was released in November 2018, the Acute Phase in December 2019 and the final piece, The Recovery Phase, was released march 27th 2020, together with the whole album available exclusively on vinyl.

Collaborating with the performance collective Absurdum Temporary Art, Loljud performed the sold out, captivating concert I’m Out Of Order Until Further Notice, at Inkonst in Malmö. 16 speakers, sub woofers, room acoustics, visual imagery and choreography mesmerized the audience. The performance used the album The Phases as a manuscript and took form during a residency with Inter Arts Center in Malmö. At the Inter Arts Center Loljud experimented with ambisonics – a fully spherical surround sound that sonically travels all levels, including overhead and underneath the listener.

Lotta Fahlén (1990) is an artist and producer based in Malmö. In addition to her solo project Loljud she composes for other artists, and stage art shows. She’s been a live musician for Maxida Märak, toured Japan, and has opened for among others Titiyo, Jenny Vhal and U.S. Girls. As a founder behind the feminist network Synth Babes, as well as a coach at hand for Vem Kan Bli Producent Malmö, she is constantly comitted to inspiring and educating women and trans people in music production, to create more representation in the business.

With her lyrics and short novels about millenials and toxic men, Bara Karin has been described as a singing version of Lena Dunham. Bara Karin iscurrently working on her next album and music video, this time with a feverish sound telling stories about global warming and mental illness.Just like in her previous album, “I changed my voice for you”, Bara Karin experiments with her voice, as less is not always more. Together with synths and percussion, the sound can be described as space pop. Coming up next is a live streaming concert in September, and in December she’ll perform at LOUD Fest in Texas.

SVENSSONJANSSON is an electro indie duo based in South of Sweden, consisting of Sanna Svensson and Tulsa Jansson. The lyrics are about the worries and hope involved in living ones life and living it together with others. The single “Can’t Rewind” is the first single released. It is part of the EP “CODE” released 26 of June 2020. “CODE” is the first EP in the larger project of three. The two following EPs “DEEPEN” and “DENSE” are to be released end 2020 and 2021. The trilogy spells (or rather misspells) Codependence. Tulsa is a member on the board of Popkollo Malmö and has 2019/2020 taken the one year separatistic training Vem Kan Bli Producent in Stockholm. The duo is mixing and producing themselves. The single Can’t Rewind got great reviews and made PSL top 20 list.

Keep your ears open for this voice. Elsa Esmeralda Hedberg is known at the London underground scene for her vocal collaborations with legendary club music names. She has recently made her debut as a solo artist and producer. As a newly signed songwriting talent at Playground Music, she has a lot of colorful electronic music in the pipeline.

With the solo project Elsiope, Elsa combines her influences from soul, IDM, indie pop and industrial techno to create a new genre she calls Singer-Songwriter-Futurism. Elsiope’s lo-fi beats and synth-based landscapes merge with picturesque lyrics and airy singing – on a playful border between the gloomy and the hopeful.

She joins EQ Loves Music with the premiere of the song Two Fingers in her bedroom together with her Omnichord.

London-based indie electronica musician DANI .ELLA (@daniellalinan) creates an atmospheric, dreamy sphere incorporating influence from alternative, electronic, and indie.

Presenting a new tack in collaboration with the Swiss French Korean singer-songwriter Jinju Uncia(@jinju.uncia). An artist traveling between genres such as alternative hip-hop, cross-cultural music, experimental pop.

DANI .ELLA’s production and Jinju Uncia’s poetry came together and those pieces formed the song MOSAIC. A song about past relationships, still constituting our present. Stories that are stored in our brain’s desks. If you look at the world, you’ll see millions of mosaics flying around, searching for new stories to be built.

Audio embellished with the visual by the Swiss illustrator Wolfgang Wiler (@der_heisse_wolfgang) which elevates MOSAICs perspective.

dolltr!ck is the artist project of Singapore-born electronic musician Claire Marie Lim, who entered the scene as a DJ, remixer, and live experience designer for Grammy-nominated and Billboard-charting artists.

Known for her dynamic live electronic sets with influences from Disclosure, TOKiMONSTA, and Madeon, dolltr!ck’s palette of dreamy synths, punchy drum machines, and crystal-clear vocals lets her seamlessly meld electronica, pop, future bass, and dance music. Her music and arts advocacy endeavors have been hailed as “shattering the glass ceiling of electronic music”, with recognition from industry giants like iHeartRadio, Spotify, and the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs).

Rebecka Wijk Fagerbers dokumentär “Women in Music Production” kan du se här:

For almost a year Rebecka W.Fagerberg has been filming and editing the new documentary Women in Music Production in collaboration with EQLovesMusic. The Documentary had a preview at EQLovesFestival ONLINE2020 the 26:st of September, and will officially be released the 1:st of October 2020. We wanted to highlight Rebecka and her process regarding the making of the film, and asked her a few questions:

  • Hi Rebecka, how and where are you currently during this pandemic?
Hi! I’m good! I’ve just moved into a new apartment, so I’m sitting at my new and improved workstation right now. (The only thing new about it is a wireless lamp, but I like it.) It’s where I spend most of my time these days.
  • It’s been a year since you started creating the EQLovesMusic Documentary. Women in Music Production. Can you tell us a little about the journey and the idea from the idea to do this documentary and a bit about the process?
We started talking about this project two years ago, but didn’t start shooting until we got to New York in June last year. Going into this project, I had no idea how much time and effort it would take to make a 30 minute documentary. I had only made videos that were around five to ten minutes before, and never anything that depended on this many people. But I felt motivated to try something new. I’ve always loved music but never really been on the performing side of it so I was looking for a way to bring more music into my work. And then I
got this opportunity to work with EQLovesMusic which has been really exciting.

  • About the topic of the movie and equality, how did you come across the subject? And why did it resonate with you ?
A few years back I remember my friend telling me that I should be more feminist. And at that time I didn’t really understand why that was important. But as time went on I began to see what she meant, and one day I came across this tweet that asked female followers to write down what they would do at night if all men had a 9 pm curfew. The answers were as simple as “I would go for a walk.” As women we are taught at a very young age that we should always be careful. And I wish I could say that the fear is irrational, but it’s not. We also still have to work a little harder to be recognized for our work. Sometimes it’s so subtle that other people don’t even notice it, and that’s exactly why we need to listen to each other. Film is a great way to share your experiences and reach out to people so I’m really happy that I can help shed some light on this issue.

  • Is there anything in your own career as a photographer/filmmaker that you would like to be changed for the better? What and how?
Any profession that requires technical proficiency tends to be dominated by men, and the same goes for photography and filmmaking. So I would love to see more women at local workshops and seminars and in tutorials on YouTube. Being a creator can be scary because you have to showcase your work. But we all have something in common and that is that we love to create things. Keep that in mind when you feel intimidated by other people in the
room. I’ve learned that asking questions—and being asked—is actually kind of flattering. It means that someone else is interested in the same thing as you are and/or look up to you. If we can make the most of that and treat everyone as colleagues and as people on the same team, I think we will have a better and more sustainable working environment.

  • How was the trip to NYC? And how was it like meeting all the role models?
The trip to NYC is the most memorable experience of my career so far. I got to see how it’s possible to connect to people across nations and work together towards the same goal. The meetup at The Consulate General of Sweden in New York was so warm and welcoming.
Everyone was laidback and there was no pressure to act a certain way despite the fact that we all came from such different backgrounds. Some had worked in the music industry for years,
and some were just starting out, but it didn’t really matter. It was very inspiring to listen to the role models talking about their work and achievements and how they handle difficult situations. I can relate to a lot of it as a photographer.

  • Did you develop any specific skill during this production?
I’ve learnt so much, maybe not a specific skill but the way I work and how I collaborate with others will be different from now on. I know how to manage a larger project and I know that working with others is the best way to make great things happen. I’ve also learnt how to have fun while working because I used to be so focused on what I was doing that I forgot to be present in the moment.

  • Film and photography can be a bit of a lonely working environment, as well as music production. What is it that inspires you to continue creating?
What inspires me is that I can use the things that I’m good at to help others. Visual communication is about taking something complex and presenting it in a way that is accessible to more people. It’s a challenge but that’s what makes it fun.

  • What are your future hopes regarding this documentary?
I hope that whoever watches it will take a moment to just sit down and listen. We don’t always have to react to everything immediately. Sometimes it’s enough to ask yourself how this affects you and how you can make a change for yourself and the people around you. The
film is also meant to inspire young girls and female identifying youth to pursue a career in creative technology. The documentary will be released on YouTube on October 1st.

  • Do you have any more projects lining up in the near future? If yes what? What’s your main focus right now in this moment?
I’m currently studying at the Digital Designer programme at Yrgo here in Gothenburg so that’s my priority. As far as freelancing goes, I don’t have any projects lined up right now so I’m looking forward to a calm fall, spending more time outside and watching the leaves
change color. It’s a perfect season for photography so hopefully that’s what I’ll be doing.

Thank you ever so much for creating this important film to help us continue with our work regarding raising awareness!

During this ongoing pandemic EQLovesMusic has started working towards developing an easily accessible approach digitally. In collaboration with QueensLab in Gothenburg we want to present our new logotype!

This Logotype is designed by Pia at QueensLab, and Pia Olsson is a graphic designer with a passion for equality and feminism. During the process of this logo creation, a slogan was also stated “We stand for equality in music production!”. Pia gathered some valuable information about our organization and pinned it down to totally nail this challenge!
Some inspirational words that she used for our organization, while planning this logotype was: Music Production, Inclusiveness, Stylish&Modern, Recognition, Form and a Color Scale-Building Emotion.

This resulted in our clean and recognizable logotype with the beautiful pride rainbow colors incorporated in an equalizer, that symbolizes Inclusiveness and equality in the music production field/line of work. Elin Forsner stepped in later to create a pulsating animation for the equalizer for the AVI version of the logo. So from this process we now have a wonderful package of logotypes, both for our organization and for the festival!

The rainbow colors in the new logo is a symbol for openness and inclusiveness, due to us striving to be inclusive and supportive of non binary and trans people, we find it perfect with the all the beautiful colors! With this new logotype we also feel determined and empowered continuing working with EQLovesFestival ONLINE 2020 and developing other online solutions for our members in our organization, and creating a clear and stylish layout for our followers.

Thank you Pia, Elin and QueensLab!
